Thursday April 2nd, 6-8:30pm: I Wish I’d Said – Anti-Racism Theatre Workshop by Tali Freed Tali will again host her anti-racism theatre event I Wish I’d Said, at Community Change Inc. 14 Beacon Street, Room 605, Boston, MA 02108, all welcome. Donations welcome – donations go to Community Change Inc. RSVP: tali@talifreed.com Workshop Description: Have you ever faced an uncomfortable situation where you tried to speak out or where you wish you would have spoken out against racism-outright or subtle-toward you or someone else? If so, please come to this anti-racism theater workshop where participants using role-play will gain confidence and “practice” speaking up/pushing back against racism/racial injustice. This workshop is led by Natali Freed, a performer/educator and past co-facilitator of White People Challenging Racism: Moving from Talk to Action. Studio Vocal Workshop by Natali Freed, Friday April 3rd 7-9pm (Workshop size is limited to 4 participants & 5 observers). Vocalist/Voice Teacher Natali Freed will be leading this workshop geared toward singers / people who love to sing and who have an aspiration to record in a studio setting. This 2-hour workshop will give participants an experience of singing into studio microphones, while wearing studio headphones (hearing their own voices in real-time recording), applying techniques of vocal production – breath, tone, resonance, expression, in a professional studio setting; as well as having the chance to sing with each other (simple vocal phrases) in this studio setting; experiencing blend, dynamics, overdubbing, listening back, and microphone techniques. This workshop is co-produced by Recording Engineer Lars Wicklund & Vocalist / Voice Teacher, Natali Freed. The workshop will be held at: Big T Productions 78 Sagamore St. in Quincy, MA, www.bigtproductions.com. Participants may bring instruments but is not necessary. On the teaching front… (Feb 2015) Tali has recently had a car accident. No one was hurt, thank goodness. But, Tali will not be driving to teach any in-home lessons for a long time! (She’s not getting a new car anytime soon.) BUT, Tali can offer in-home lessons near red line T stops (prices vary depending on distance – inquire about rates!)

Tali has been enjoying teaching voice lessons at Club Passim Music School since of March 2014. The next semester begins soon! And some spontaneous collaborative performing at a Joplin/Hendrix Tribute night.

Where: Democracy Center 45 Mt Auburn St Harvard Square

Description: Using theatre warm-ups & role-playing to gain practice & strength for standing up against racism, standing up for equality, and confronting unearned racial privilege. All are welcome, please respect the seriousness of the topic. Participants bring from memory (or written down) scenes where they heard a racist comment (directed towards themselves or someone else) and they wish they’d spoken up but weren’t able to. Role-play a new ending to scenes by: saying what you wish you’d said. Discuss, come up with, & act out ways to respond. Act in each other’s scenes, or just come and watch. Optional / additional “scenes” participants may choose to role-play: Are you curious how your scene may have transpired had the genders (and/or other potential power disparities) been different? Try your scene but change the genders (and/or other potential power disparities) of the people in the scene. And/or: Do you have a fear that a certain group of people thinks a certain way about you (has a prejudice)? Create & role-play a scene to challenge your fear. Say what you wish you’d or they would say. Discus & act out different outcomes. Monetary donations appreciated but not required, or bring a snack to share or stay & help clean up! This event is not run by any organization.

Act out a “scene” from your life or imagination where you heard a racial comment directed at your or someone else & you wish you’d spoken up but didn’t. Create your scene w/ another participant & say what you wish you’d said. Role-play in each other’s scenes, practice & share ideas of responding with good argument. (Or simply come and watch!)

Hot Lava Mamas Gig

I’ve organized this gig & the stage’ll be filled with fun performers!

Hope you can make it! Ages 19+

Here’s the lineup for the evening:

6:30: Naomi Edelman, featuring duets with Natali Freed

7:00: Natali Freed, featuring duets with: Ethan Mackler, Kisnel Personel, Dave Konya

7:45: Deb Picard, featuring Natali Freed, Aparna Das & Seth Heidkamp

8:30-9:30pm THE HOT LAVA MAMAS: Natali Freed (vocals/violin), Deb Picard (vocals/guitar), Brendan Gibson (guitar), Nargis Khestoo (rap), Ethan Mackler (bass), and Naomi Edelman (Background vocals/percussion/guitar)!

(We’ll sadly be missing Zack Niman at this gig!)

Together, we’re a little bit funky, a little bit folky, slightly rock-y, and definitely a fun bunch to listen to and watch! Most of the HLM songs are originals by Natali & Deb (and one by Naomi, as well!).

You may want to get up & dance, or relax & reflect… In any case, we hope to make your night, and you’ll make ours if you come! ;-D

$3.00 suggested donation.
